H.B.
White or Brian White (1902-1984) was a British Cartoonist and publisher, famous for 'The
Nipper' in the Daily Mail, 'Keyhole Kate' and 'Double Trouble' in the London
Evening Standard. In 1948 he published 'George Bernard Shaw through the Camera'.
He also worked on the first feature animation for the 1953 film 'Animal Farm', based on
the George Orwell novel.
He was sculptor Jon Edgar's grandfather.
The Nipper was based on his uncle, John White, with a supporting character
developed when John's sister Susan (Jon Edgar's mother) was born. Brian White was undoubtedly an early
influence through many informal post-Sunday lunch drawing lessons.
Various
original material and biographical material is held in the family. |
